Scientific research into the effect of Skincair<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div>

An extensive medical scientific study has been carried out into the effects of the specific properties of\u00a0 the Skincair\u00a0 medical\u00a0 3D fitted\u00a0 sheet among\u00a0 112\u00a0 residents\u00a0 of\u00a0 8 nursing\u00a0 homes\u00a0 with reduced mobility and\u00a0 an increased risk\u00a0 of\u00a0 pressure ulcers. The effects of\u00a0 Skincair have\u00a0 been studied on incidence of pressure ulcers and dependence on care.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>

The\u00a0 longitudinal\u00a0 practice\u00a0 study\u00a0 was\u00a0 led\u00a0 by\u00a0 Dr. Martin van Leen\u00a0 with\u00a0 co-authorship of Prof. Dr. Jos Schols of\u00a0 the\u00a0 CAPHRI\u00a0 faculty\u00a0 of\u00a0 Maastricht\u00a0 University. This research was\u00a0 around\u00a0 7\u00a0 March 2022\u00a0 published\u00a0 \u00a0in\u00a0 the\u00a0 \u00a0magazine\u00a0 \u00a0Wounds International. The\u00a0 participants\u00a0 stayed\u00a0 first\u00a0 6 weeks on\u00a0 their\u00a0 standard\u00a0 \u00a0mattress\u00a0 \u00a0and\u00a0 a\u00a0 cotton sheet,\u00a0 then\u00a0 they\u00a0 stayed\u00a0 in\u00a0 the\u00a0 intervention period 6 weeks on the Skincair medical fitted sheet.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>

The observed effects and results were:<\/h3>\n

The residents’ self-reliance in bed increased considerably, and less care was required for changing positions and repositioning.<\/p>\n

      Effects of a breathable silk-like, 3-layer ventilating
      \nmattress sheet on self-repositioning, repositioning
      \nsupport and pressure ulcer incidence;
      \na pragmatic observational study<\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section>

      Besides pressure relief by using special support surfaces and repositioning, pressure ulcer guidelines on prevention and treatment nowadays\u00a0 also\u00a0 advise\u00a0 on\u00a0 shear force\u00a0 reduction and\u00a0 regulation of\u00a0 the microclimate by using silk-like mattress covers instead of cotton covers.<\/p>\n

      Skincair (Sense Textile), a newly developed breathable silk-like, 3-layer ventilating mattress sheet, reduces shear forces and is able to absorb\u00a0 excess\u00a0 fluid,\u00a0 which\u00a0 may result in better self-repositioning in bed, reduced nursing repositioning support and enhanced pressure ulcer (PU) prevention. Moreover, reducing the amount of fluid and improving the microclimate may result in lesser damage of the skin overall. A total of 112 residents of eight nursing homes at risk of PU development, participated in a 12-weeks observational study.<\/p>\n

      Residents were selected, based on the following criteria: age >65 year, Braden score <18, laying on standard cotton mattress cover around a preventive mattress and need of nursing support for repositioning. During the first\u00a0 6\u00a0 weeks,\u00a0 all\u00a0 112 residents\u00a0 laid on\u00a0 the cotton\u00a0 sheet\u00a0 (control period)\u00a0 and\u00a0 during\u00a0 the\u00a0 second\u00a0 6\u00a0 weeks all residents\u00a0 laid\u00a0 on\u00a0 the\u00a0 new\u00a0 3-layer\u00a0 ventilating\u00a0 mattress sheet (intervention period) while receiving care as usual. There were no mattress changes during this 12-week period. On the cotton sheet all residents were unable to perform self-repositioning in bed and, therefore, needed nursing support for repositioning. At the end of the 6 weeks intervention period, 69.6% of the residents were able to change their position in bed without nursing support, implicating that the requirement of nursing support for repositioning decreased significantly.<\/p>\n

      The development of\u00a0 pressure\u00a0 ulcers\u00a0 (PUs) was also monitored. In the control period, when residents were laying on the\u00a0 cotton sheet, 22\u00a0 residents developed 41 PUs (category 2). In the intervention\u00a0 period, two residents developed a category 2 PU and one resident showed deterioration of a category 2 into a category 3 PU. This study showed that the use of the new breathable silk-like, 3-layer ventilating mattress sheet, which acts as the direct patient interface, improved self-repositioning of patients in bed and led to less need for nursing support during repositioning. Moreover, a lower PU incidence was observed.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>
