Reviews from clients, nurses and occupational therapists with the Skincair 3D medical fitted sheet

“Everyone is very enthusiastic within our team at Avoord in Zundert. Anyone lying on the 3D-sheet does not want to get off it. It is also less stressful for the caregivers. It makes work easier and less physically demanding.”

Nurse Avoord, Zundert

“I am 28 years old and have had a (sensory incomplete) C-5 lesion for 11 years now. In recent years I sleep very badly and I am worrying about my lying position, different mattresses, folding sheets and pressure points on my tailbone. The Skincair initially looked very synthetic to me. I’ve always slept on simple cotton jersey fitted sheets with a flannel underneath. This should be fairly breathable but always ended up getting warm and clammy. Although I hardly perspire. So I was a bit skeptical when I felt the soft, shiny material for the first time. I thought: ‘this is going to stick’. However, complete the opposite. Skincair feels very airy and smooth. There are therefore no creases and folds under your buttocks. My regular bedding always had stretch marks on my buttocks in the morning and I had the whole thing pulled tight before going to bed. The nice thing about the Skincair is the way it is placed on the bed. You simply fold it over and attach a strap to the head and foot end to prevent it from sliding. It has been developed for a single sized mattress, but fits effortlessly around my 120 x 210 cm mattress. Because it is quite slippery, sliding is quite easy. I clearly feel less resistance when turning or tilting my hips. I use a hoist, but I can imagine that it is a very pleasant surface for people who make a transfer themselves. All the more so for people who use sliding sheets or mats. I notice that I sleep a little better because of the lightness of the sheet. The pressure points on my tailbone become a lot more even and slowly disappear. I can’t say with 100% certainty whether this is directly related to the Skincair, but what a fantastic product this is!”

Mr. Gonnaerd, Gouda

“I have had chemo and radiation therapy. I found out and find that the Skincair is very comfortable when sleeping; I felt the pressure relief on my skin, ribs and joints. So your pressure points are much less than with a normal cotton sheet. Your skin is very porous and sensitive during chemo and snags to a normal sheet, the skin slides much easier on this product. I no longer sleep without it, I now also turn around much easier and I notice that I can stay longer on the 3D sheet because it has a cooling effect. I often sleep on my stomach with my head on the material, in the morning I no longer have wrinkles in my face.”

As a Parkinson’s disease patient, I contacted the occupational therapist to see what is possible to find solutions for the complaints I have. During the conversation with the occupational therapist, we discussed turnings in bed. I have silk pajamas and a “smooth” standard fitted sheet, but it is  still not ideal. Turning from right to left side is very difficult, and what is annoying is the tightness of the pajamas after the turn. After a struggle, he manages to release the tension of the pajamas. I usually lie on my right side and wake up in the same position I went to bed with. Proteion’s occupational therapist would see what could be done to address this problem. After a few days she came with a Skincair fitted sheet to test. When I went to bed for the first time I didn’t know what had hit me!! For a long time now I have been able to sleep on both sides again. It is wonderful to experience that during and after turning the pajamas are not tight and you can simply move. I was told by the occupational therapist that the Skincair sheet, which appears to be a solution for me, is not yet intended fully for the consumer market, but primarily for patients in institutions! I have learned from knowledge that there are several patients within home care who need to be turned during the night! I don’t have an overview of numbers, but I think it makes sense to balance them against each other. The “smooth” Skincair sheet could yield a saving that negates the difference between the price of the other sheet. It is not only the price of the sheets, but as I have heard from knowledge who works in care, it makes a difference in the spinal and back problems of nursing staff. I hope with this piece of text that it will be possible for more people to use the drape and that it will offer progress for both patient and care

“I have had an incomplete spinal cord injury for 5.5 years. When sleeping I had a lot of trouble turning over in bed and because of that I experience problems with staying in the same position for too long. To make moving easier I have a sliding sheet and to get in and out of bed I use a transfer board and bed parrot. On the Skincair I am very more much comfortable compared to normal bedding and I can get in and out of bed much easier and turning is better (sometimes with help). To conclude, I sleep much better.”

Reimerink, Voorburg

“I had surgery on my hip and I have some stitches. Since I have this 3D bedsheet, I have much less trouble with that.”

Riet, 52 years old

“Less odor, much comfort, less pressure ulcers. In addition, the transfers take considerably less time.”

Elisabeth Nursing Foundation, Breda

“When I heard that there was a 3D bedsheet that promotes mobility in bed, I had my doubts, because it sounded too good to be true. When I was offered the opportunity to try it out, I immediately said yes. What I didn’t expect happened anyway. The smoothness made getting in and out of bed a lot easier. The physical imposing sliding turned into a quiet sliding movement. This was especially pleasant for my legs. Turning in bed, which at first only worked if I was lucky, now has become – I would almost say – naturally. With good preparation I can now independently turn on my left and right side and return on my back. This makes me feel freer and more independent and I also sleep much better.”

Mrs. Bekers-Oerlemans

“I have itching in my lower legs at night, because of that I wake up quite often. Since sleeping on the Skincair for a month, I scratch less often. As a result, I sleep better and I am better rested from sleeping in the morning.”

Will, age 80

“I have had the product tested by a client. Mobility of Mr. in bed is limited due to Parkinson’s. He can move poorly, rolls over with great difficulty and up/down with difficulty. Moving up/down was a little easier with the Skincair, unfortunately not rolling over. Mr. also has neuropathy, which makes his feet very sensitive to pressure and friction. He indicated that he had less trouble on the Skincair.”

Henriette, occupational therapist

“What is particularly nice is that the sheet remains tight around/on the mattress in all circumstances. I often adjust the height of the head and foot of the bed. With an ordinary sheet it will start to curl, the Skincair remains tightly fitted around the mattress. This is particularly beneficial for comfort. As a result, the nurses need very little time to prepare the bed sheet. This saves a lot of time and irritation compared to a non-smooth and tight bottom sheet. At first I thought that the Skincair was less slippery than regular bedding, but now it turns out that it is indeed smoother. For best results, you should actually be naked in bed. As far as humidity control is concerned, I still have questions. I wonder if that could be because of the anti-pressure ulcer mattress I have. Or maybe because of my own perspiration. In use, it is a very comfortable product with indeed the many pluses that they describe on their website. All in all, a must for people like me, who lie in bed a lot and often change their position. I do think it is a bit expensive.”

Arthur, Weert

“The material feels cool, but quickly absorbs body heat and feels pleasant. It absorbs moisture well and does not shift. Machine cleaning is good and it dries quickly. You can also put it in the dryer.”

Annelies de Regt, 60 years old

“When my father (85 years old) broke his foot, I put the test product on his bed. “Try it out,” I said. After a day he said: ‘That Skincair, when does it have to go back?’ He has now been on it for two days and he told himself that it slid easily and that he sweated less in bed.”

Corrie Braspenning

“Turning in bed used to be very difficult due to my low spinal cord injury and my anti-decubitus mattress has a neoprene toplayer which often makes it feel sweaty. The Skincair feels considerably less sweaty. My arms are regularly under my torso at night. On the Skincair I can put them on easier to get out from under. Also turning from side to side takes less effort and so I wake up less often.”

Mr. Crown, low spinal cord injury

“I help many wheelchair-bound people, including people with a stroke, with a spinal cord injury and somewhat older clients who need care and nursing. I have been using the product for about 2.5 years. I started it with people with stroke, with spinal cord injury patients, and with terminal patients. What immediately struck me is that I could turn and slide people without straining my back. People with CVA, stroke are also more able to sit up independently, this is not possible with a cotton sheet on the bed. The benefits: I put it to bed to prevent pressure ulcers. In addition, it is easier to get in and out of bed. The 3D sheet is neither too stiff nor too smooth. In one stroke patient, moving in bed has become much easier, he can now turn left and right independently, even to the part that has become paralyzed. As far as I’m concerned, Skincair is ideal for healthcare staff. What is nice and very explainable is that clients also want the product back on their bed quickly if it is not used or available for a while.” Joke Gerritsen, 67, a nurse with a specialization in operations and home care nursing and has worked in home care for 16 years.

“I have suffered from psoriasis for years. I have large, moist blisters all over my body, causing a lot of soreness on my buttocks, legs, arms, back and stomach. At the moment I have a lot of blisters that give me a lot of fluid loss. The Skincair absorbs this moisture very well. It’s very nice that I don’t have to use an insert on my mattress.”

Mrs. Schoonen-Westall, Dordrecht

“Almost my entire lower leg and my knees are covered with psoriasis. I always apply this at night. I’ve been testing Skincair’s 3D sheet for several weeks to experience what it can do for me. I am very satisfied. The material feels very nice and turning on the bed is a lot easier; you slide more easily. After that, when I had my regular sheet in bed for a few days, I had the idea that I had to ’tilt’ more if I wanted to turn at night. For the psoriasis spot on my shin, it was also better with the Skincair.”
